Second Industry Advisory Board Meeting

Second Industry Advisory Board Meeting

Second Industry Advisory Board Meeting of Post Graduate Programme in Human Resource Management (PGP-HRM) of Indian Institute of Management Indore

The second industry advisory board meeting of PGP-HRM of IIM Indore was held on December 11, 2018 in the Navi Mumbai campus of IIM Indore. Thought leaders from industry reviewed the progress of PGP-HRM and the numerous workshops that were conducted to supplement the curriculum. They emphasized the need to nurture behavioural competencies of becoming credible champions, managing change, developing a service orientation and emphasizing diversity and inclusion among students. They urged that the blend of academic inputs and workshops by practitioners could continue to build these competencies among students. As industry entered a new phase of technology induced transformations, members suggested that strong behavioural competencies could enable students to effectively contribute to organizational agendas when they graduated.

The members also recognized the need for the industry interface project (IIP) which is a part of the academic curriculum of PGP-HRM. PGP-HRM participants will spend two continuous blocks of four weeks each in the second year in different industries to understand how HRM concepts are being applied in the organisational world. Members outlined a learning framework which could enable participants to actively reflect on their immersions in the organisational world. Members also suggested ways in which academic discussions could take place to leverage such organisational immersions to help participants build their own unique insights about the role of HR in organisations. With these unique insights, participants needed to appreciate a range of factors that inform organisational dynamics. Lived realities in organisations encompass a range of factors that outline how talent is mobilised to provide a competitive edge to organisations.

Members also suggested various processes that could be adopted for identifying students who were interested in the space of HR. Identifying these students early in the admission process could lead to a motivated pool of students who were committed to becoming HR professionals. They outlined numerous inputs that could be provided to nurture the learning agility of the students. Eventually, the classroom as a site of active reflection, analysis and imagination was emphasized. Members urged that academic curriculum should tap into the creative potential of participants and help them to appreciate the emerging nuances of HR.

Members emphasized that the current model of PGP-HRM where participants gained a strong understanding of business rationalities was useful. Eventually, HRM practices were about integrating human resources in strong ways to solve business problems. These problems reflected a variety of transitions in the environment. The ability of human resources to adapt to these transitions and tap into new sources of value reflected the robustness of HRM processes. At the same time, it was also necessary for HRM processes to sustain core organisational values and cultural frameworks in the midst of changes taking place in the external world.

Members suggested that student’s interaction with industry leaders would give them an exposure to a wide range of thoughts. The members urged that the current practice of inviting CHROs and other industry leaders for interactions with participants should be continued. These talks could be strategically placed in different terms so that participants could appreciate how HR leaders created their own frameworks for actions. The experiences of HR leaders could deepen the understanding of participants about the craft aspects of HR. These could then become the basis for participants to structure their own deeper inquiries about the HR profession.
