Ecosystems and Platforms: A Strategic View

Overview

In today’s dynamic business environment, success of a firm rests on understanding ecosystems and platforms, i.e., the loose network of suppliers, distributors, customers, technology providers, and a host of other organizations, which mold the creation and delivery of the firm’s offering. This workshop is your key to deciphering this dominating nuance of modern industries, by unravelling the fundamental attributes of ecosystems and platforms, and how managers deal with the unique challenges that they pose. Join us on this transformative journey to uncover the secrets of success in age of ecosystems and platforms.

Objectives

  • Exploring Ecosystems: The emergence of ecosystems and platforms across industries.
  • Theory of Ecosystems: Alternative theoretical ways of understanding ecosystems and building a basic theoretically rooted framework.
  • Value creation and Appropriation: How do ecosystems create value and how is value appropriated in an ecosystem.
  • Managing Ecosystems: How do ecosystems align multiple parties in novel ways? What are the challenges in picking the right opportunity, aligning the right partners, and targeting the right market and, perhaps most importantly, setting the right expectations from an ecosystem? How does an ecosystem context affect offensive and defensive competitive strategy? What new management challenges arise when value creation and capture no longer depend just on satisfying customers and beating rivals, but also on our ability to identify, align, and maintain critical partners and partnerships?

We will discuss the above aspects contextualizing them to emerging digital platforms (i.e., AirBnB, UBER, Amazon, Tesla, iOS, Android) and also public ecosystems (i.e., entrepreneurial ecosystems, healthcare ecosystems, export promotion ecosystems).

Content

  • Seminal Harvard Business Review articles will be discussed to develop the theoretical and practice view on ecosystems and platforms.
  • Detailed case studies of success and failure of ecosystems and platforms would be shared and discussed.
  • To understand ecosystem competition, we will play a simulation game.
