IIM Indore’s mission is to be socially conscious and the institute is always eager to contribute to the society and nation building. With the same objective, IIM Indore has signed an MoU with the Madhya Pradesh Police to further reinforce the professionalism between the two and also contribute to the development of a superior security environment and orderliness at public places through a mutual academic-practitioner collaboration system.

In line with the MoU, IIM Indore conducted a Management Development Programme for the Madhya Pradesh Police Officers from March 16-18, 2021. The three-day programme was attended by 19 top officers ranked DIG, AIG, SP and Commandant from different districts of the state.

The programme was inaugurated by Professor Himanshu Rai, Director, IIM Indore; in the presence of Professor Mit Vachhrajani, Programme Coordinator & Faculty, IIM Indore and all the registered officers for the programme.

Discussing about one of his favourite books—‘The Alchemist’ by Paulo Coelho, Professor Rai said that people often know their destiny and aren’t afraid to chase their dreams when they are young. However, people tend to get frightened to chase their dreams as they age; and to realise our own destiny should only be our obligation. He said that the fear of gaining or losing money and the fear of failure keeps us from giving our best to accomplish our dreams. ‘Money is what money does- nothing more and nothing less. Also, you don’t become a failure when you go wrong. You become a failure when you stop trying new things because you are scared to fail’, he explained.  He noted that this MDP would help the participants understand the nuances of negotiation and conflict; and will help them become a better negotiator—considering the fact that these frontline warriors have to face multiple challenging conflicts on day to day basis.

The three day programme provided insights on various topics ranging from conflict management, basics of negotiation, behaviour assessment, creative problem solving and organizational transformation. The classes consisted of various case studies, readings and multiple interactive sessions with the proficient faculty from IIM Indore, who helped the officers enhance their knowledge and skills; which are crucial for leadership and administrative positions.

Sharing that the programme has benefitted the officers in multiple ways, Mr. Manoj Rai, AIG, SISF, Police Headquarters Lal Parade Ground, Bhopal said that the course had been designed keeping in mind the important role of a senior police officer. ‘Police officers witness various conflicts on day to day basis. The programme provided us insights on how to take important decisions during conflicts in law and order, communal situations and accidents. We also learnt how to communicate in a better way and be public-friendly, which would help us gain the citizens’ trust’, he said. Such management programmes with excellent faculty members and experts help us in understanding how to implement strategic and management theories in real-life situations, how to solve problems in an effective manner and also enhances our learning process, he added.

Ms. Ruchi Vardhan Mishra, DIG-Administration, Police Headquarters, Jahangirabad, Bhopal said that the programme helped the officers learn negotiation skills and how to deal a conflict so that it results in a with a win-win situation. ‘We as police officers are in various interactive role with the society, media and organization. The programme provided us an exposure to various strategies, modules and management principles which have helped us learn how theories and models can be implemented while interacting with the stakeholders of the society’, she said. Such programmes by an institute as prestigious as IIM Indore provide opportunities to the senior officers to enhance their learning skills and stay updated, she added.

The three day MDP concluded on March 18, 2021 with certificate distribution to the officers for successfully completing the programme. The officers left the campus on a happy note and expressed their delight on being a part of this programme and for a joyous stay at IIM Indore.
