Social Sensitivity at IIMI

All business schools strive to develop successful and competent managers who can occupy the topmost echelons of the corporate ladder but they often forget to inculcate a sense moral responsibility in their students towards their society and environment.

IIM Indore, however, has always been cognizant of an institute’s role in shaping the thought processes of its students and has, therefore, made social sensitivity a mainstay of its residential programmes. From the Rural Immersion Programme to the Indore Marathon, from school adoption to computer literacy programmes, the Institute has a lot to offer through its ambit of social sensitivity.

The Marathon, held each year on the 2nd of October, is organized with the sole purpose of raising awareness about a poignant social issue. Similarly, the Rural Immersion Programme aims not only at exposing students to the rural population but also at apprising them about a society that exists beyond the familiar urban limits.

The Institute’s creed is to not only focus on creating entrepreneurs but to also stress on the importance of developing social entrepreneurs.

School Adoption Programme (SAP)

School Adoption Programme (SAP), is an initiative by PRAGATI, social sensitivity cell of IIM Indore. The aim of the body is to improve education, and provide infrastructure facilities to selected government primary schools. Under this Programme, IIM Indore has adopted the following schools:

  • EG School Pigdamber
  • Government Primary School, Umaria
  • Government Primary School, Rangwasa
  • Government Primary & Middle School, Shramik Colony, Rau
  • Government Primary School, Nawada.

The main concerns of PRAGATI revolves around enhancing the facilities and infrastructure of the government schools to improve the quality of conditions in which students learn. Another major function of the team is to conduct donation drives which not only provides materials to the underprivileged ones, but bundles of happiness too. Unlike other donations wherein people give away discarded or only necessary items, we at PRAGATI have taken an initiative to provide the kids with one thing that they would value the most. In the past, the IIM Indore Community has contributed to gift Teddy bears, Crayon set, Volleyball and Sports kit to name a few which were received by the students.

PRAGATI conducts various distribution drives throughout the year, wherein sweaters, bags, shoes, stationery items were distributed in the past years.  Apart from this, the program undertook construction of washrooms for girls and boys in the EG School, Pigdamber. In addition to this, a water tank was installed to facilitate convenient water storage at the school.

Jagriti

Jagriti, conducted during IRIS is one of the many events conducted by Pragati, the social sensitivity cell of IIM Indore. Held every year as a sensitivity drive, the event is aimed to increase the feeling of inclusion among the underprivileged children belonging to the villages nearby. By visiting rural schools in and around Indore, one of them is selected after being evaluated on several parameters. Students from that school are encouraged to write or draw their wish from a given list of gifts they would prefer to be given to them. These gifts included items like teddy bear, school bag, cricket bat, umbrella and ball etc. which are procured with the help of whole IIM Indore community.

This year on the second day of IRIS’19 i.e. on 22 November 2019, they were all invited on the IIM campus for a workshop where they were taught to broaden their creativity, patience, coordination, mathematical knowledge, etc. through various activities like painting, origami and counting games. After that they were taken to a lawn where a Wish Tree was decorated for them, all surrounded by their gifts wrapped up beautifully. Pragati tries to fulfill their wish with those gifts. The feeling of getting something new as a gift and not as a charity is a whole different emotion into itself. Pragati tries to upheld that nurtured value every year during IRIS by conducting this event of Jagriti.

iHelp

iHelp, is a social sensitivity initiative by IPM Participants, which aims at fostering social change by nurturing talent of underprivileged children. It is a community which wishes to educate, encourage, motivate, inspire and lead the underprivileged children of Madhya Pradesh to pursue higher education which will stabilise their economic well-being to a large extent. Among all the duties of a good student, we are here to be a good citizen. To become a teacher and friend to those who need guidance to come out of the dark windows, to show them the light and give them opportunity to fly.

We do this by visiting schools every Thursday, with new activities and study modules for the students to encourage them learn. Every year we organize Annual Visit on Children’s Day and students are brought to campus for a tour and games.
