Sumit Chakraborty holds a PhD in Strategy from the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIM Ahmedabad). He also holds a B.E. in Mechanical Engineering from Jadavpur University, Kolkata (2004).
Before his academic career, Sumit accumulated over 13 years of corporate experience in the infrastructure and engineering sectors, where he served in various leadership roles. This extensive corporate exposure informs his research and teaching, providing him with a nuanced understanding of the strategic and operational challenges faced by firms.
Sumit’s research interests include international corporate strategy, family business, entrepreneurship, and startup ecosystems. His work has been published in reputed journals such as Strategic Organization and the Journal of International Management.
His research has also been presented at leading international conferences, including the Academy of Management (AOM), Academy of International Business (AIB), International Family Enterprise Research Academy (IFERA), and Strategic Management Society (SMS). His work has received recognition at premier forums, including the Best Paper Award at the Academy of Management Conference (Boston, 2023), where he was also nominated for the prestigious Douglas Nigh Award for best interdisciplinary research. He continues to contribute to the scholarly community as an ad-hoc reviewer for several leading academic journals.
At IIM Indore, Sumit teaches across a range of programs, including the Post Graduate Program (PGP), Executive Post Graduate Program (EPGP), Doctoral Program in Management (DPM), Executive Doctoral Program in Management (EDPM), and the Master of Management Studies (MMS). As a Thesis Advisory Committee Chair, he currently supervises doctoral (PhD) students working on topics such as corporate venture capital (CVC) and entrepreneurship.
Beyond academia, Sumit is an avid traveller and a passionate photographer. He enjoys trekking and has undertaken several expeditions in the Himalayas, reflecting his deep appreciation for nature and spirituality.
