Sumit Chakraborty is a faculty member in the Strategic Management area. He holds a PhD in Strategy from the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad. His doctoral dissertation, “Comparison of Indian Family and Non-family Firms’ Strategic Choices Related to International Expansion and CSR Disclosure,” delves into the influence of family ownership on the strategic behaviour of listed Indian firms, particularly in the contexts of international expansion (FDI) and sustainability disclosure. He also earned a B.E. in Mechanical Engineering from Jadavpur University, Kolkata, in 2004.
Before pursuing his PhD, Sumit amassed over 13 years of professional experience in the corporate sector. He worked in the infrastructure and engineering industries, serving in various leadership roles. This extensive industry experience has provided him with a profound understanding of the strategic and operational challenges faced by businesses in these sectors.
Sumit’s research interests are diverse, encompassing international business, competitive strategy, corporate strategy, family business, and sustainability. He has made notable contributions to these fields, with his work earning recognition such as the Best Paper Award at the Academy of Management Conference in Boston in 2023, where he was also a finalist for the prestigious ‘Douglas Nigh Award’ for best interdisciplinary research. His research has been presented at numerous high-profile conferences worldwide, and he has papers under review in top-tier academic journals. Additionally, Sumit serves as an ad-hoc reviewer for several reputable journals, demonstrating his commitment to advancing academic knowledge.
