Capacity Building Programme for CMOs begins at IIM Indore under CoE ANVESHAN

The new batch comprising 21 Chief Municipal Officers (CMOs) commenced with a Customized Management Development Programme at IIM Indore on January 09, 2024. Prof. Himanshu Rai, Director, IIM Indore, under the institute’s Centre of Excellence, ANVESHAN, inaugurated the batch. The four-day course prioritizes capacity building, emphasizing practical skills and strategic insights on urban waste management. Anchored within ANVESHAN’s mission, this programme strives to empower municipal leaders with innovative tools and approaches vital for steering sustainable urban initiatives. Prof. Shruti Tewari, Programme Coordinator, was also present on this occasion. In his inaugural address, Prof. Rai delved deeply into the essence of effective leadership, drawing inspiration from the teamwork exemplified by flying geese. He emphasized, ‘The geese change their position when they fly in a triangle. This helps everyone take rest, lead the team, and allows the team to attain more while moving towards a specific goal.’ Prof. Rai highlighted the geese’s support for an ailing member, stating, ‘Whenever a geese falls sick, two geese stay with it till it recovers, and then they again take a flight.’ He also stressed the importance of encouragement within teams, likening it to the geese at the rear honking to uplift their counterparts. ‘Leadership is not innate but cultivated through continuous learning and a willingness to be an adept team player’, he said.

He also shared IIM Indore’s mission, articulating the institution’s commitment to contextual relevance, social consciousness, and global excellence. Prof. Rai exemplified this ethos through the institute’s various sustainable initiatives, including organic farming, rainwater harvesting, and dog shelters. Emphasizing the practice of what is preached, he highlighted the institute’s dedication to action-driven principles.

Prof. Shruti Tewari extended a warm welcome to the entire batch, highlighting the significance of this second installment of the Customized Management Development Programme organized by ANVESHAN. She emphasized ANVESHAN’s pivotal role as a nodal hub and knowledge center for leadership, sanitation, and hygiene. She also threw light on the ongoing series of training programmes and research activities, affirming the initiative’s commitment to fostering leadership and driving impactful sanitation and hygiene practices.

During their stay at IIM Indore, these officers will delve into an extensive array of crucial subjects. The curriculum encompasses multifaceted topics, including project management methodologies, diverse leadership styles, and the pivotal role of public participation in waste segregation at its source. Additionally, sessions will cover comprehensive aspects such as solid waste management strategies, roadmaps for Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0, and an exploration of water management techniques from ancient practices to contemporary advancements. The programme will also spotlight innovative approaches like solid waste management tailored for smart cities, emphasizing a circular economy model. Moreover, participants will gain insights into change management strategies, the significance of green bonds, and proficient financial management practices crucial for sustainable urban initiatives.
