Prof. Rai, while addressing the gathering in Hindi, English, Sanskrit, and Bengali, emphasized the importance of languages in preserving and enriching India’s cultural landscape. He highlighted the unique contributions of both Sanskrit and Bengali in nurturing a deeper understanding of tradition, literature, and human expression. “Sanskrit is more than just an ancient language; it is the foundation upon which much of Indian philosophy, science, and literature have been built. It is a timeless treasure that encapsulates profound wisdom and knowledge”, he said. Sanskrit provides a lens through which we can view not only the past but also how those ancient insights remain relevant today. Learning this language is akin to embracing the intellectual heritage of India, he added. He also spoke about the beauty, depth, and emotional resonance of the Bengali language. “Bengali is not merely a language but a living embodiment of culture, history, and identity. Known for its sweetness, richness, and unique ability to express profound emotions, Bengali has left an indelible mark on literature, art, and music. It is a language that speaks directly to the soul, with every word carrying a deep sense of warmth and connection,” he said. He further remarked on the literary legacy of Bengali, which has produced towering figures such as Rabindranath Tagore, Kazi Nazrul Islam, and Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay. “The Bengali language is renowned for its literature and songs, where each verse resonates with melody and meaning. Bengali’s grammar is simple and accessible, but its depth lies in its ability to express complex emotions with unmatched clarity. Every word in Bengali carries layers of meaning that make it a joy to speak, read, and listen to, he said.
Sanskrit Language Instructor Mr. Pravesh Vaishnav mentioned that the Sanskrit workshop will immerse participants in the intricacies of this classical language, from its complex grammatical structures to its vast repository of philosophical texts. It aims to give learners a comprehensive understanding of Sanskrit’s enduring relevance and its capacity to foster logical thinking, philosophical inquiry, and creative expression. The Bengali workshop, led by Mr. Dilip Kumar Dutta, is designed to introduce participants to the fundamentals of the language while also allowing them to appreciate its cultural and literary richness. Participants will be exposed to Bengali literature, poetry, and music, providing them with a holistic understanding of the language and its place in Indian culture.
Prof. Rai shared the broader purpose of the language workshops at IIM Indore, stating, “These workshops are not just about learning a new language; they are about connecting with a larger cultural and intellectual tradition”. By engaging with languages like Sanskrit and Bengali, we open ourselves up to new ways of thinking, to deeper forms of expression, and to the shared heritage that defines us as a nation. IIM Indore’s commitment to such initiatives is rooted in our belief that language is a powerful tool for education, empathy, and personal growth, he said.
