Job Profile for Library Professional Assistant (On contract):
The Library Professional Assistant will support day-to-day academic and operational activities of the Learning Centre. The incumbent will contribute to collection development, user services, reference and circulation functions, library technology operations, and outreach initiatives. The position requires a strong blend of professional library knowledge, digital skills, user engagement capabilities, and the ability to work in a technology-driven academic environment. The selected candidate (s) may be assigned shift duties and any other responsibilities as required by the Institute from time to time.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in procurement of library resources (print and electronic), including vendor coordination, ordering, invoicing, duplicate checking, and record maintenance.
- Perform cataloguing, classification, and technical processing of library materials using standard practices (DDC, MARC21, metadata standards, etc.).
- Provide circulation services including membership management, issue/return of materials, reminders, overdue management, and user clearance.
- Deliver reference and research support services to faculty, research scholars, and students, including data retrieval, literature searches, bibliographies, and research assistance.
- Support access and troubleshooting of electronic resources, databases, and remote access platforms in coordination with publishers and service providers.
- Assist users in navigating digital resources, discovery tools, OPAC, institutional repositories, and other library systems.
- Plan and conduct user orientation programs, training sessions, library awareness activities, and thematic displays (physical and digital).
- Prepare and maintain library MIS reports, usage statistics, documentation, and newsletters as required.
- Support library technology operations including ILMS (Koha), RFID systems, digital library platforms (DSpace), ERMS, discovery tools, and library websites.
- Maintain accurate records of transactions, inventory, registers, and statistics.
- Attend shift duties, including evening, weekend, or holiday duties, to ensure uninterrupted library services.
- Perform any other duties assigned by the competent authority or reporting officer from time to time.
Qualification:
- Master’s Degree in Library & Information Science (MLISc) with First Class or equivalent, from a recognized University/Institute.
Work Experience:
- The candidate should have a minimum of 3 years of post-qualification professional experience in an academic or research library.
- Preference will be given to candidates with experience in IIMs / IITs / NITs / other Institutions of National Importance.
Age Limit:
- Age of the applicant should be less than 36 years till April 01, 2026.
Desirable Skills
- Strong working knowledge of library automation systems such as Koha, digital repositories such as DSpace, and RFID-based library operations.
- Proficiency in MS Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and data management applications.
- Familiarity with e-resource management, licensing, access rights, open access resources, and scholarly communication.
- Ability to handle reference queries using online and offline databases and research tools.
- Good communication (verbal and written), interpersonal, and user service skills with the ability to multitask.
- Experience in preparing user guides, resource guides, reports, and promotional materials.
- Willingness to learn new technologies and adapt to evolving library services.
The selected candidate will be offered a fixed-term contract for one year and extendable one year at a time for a maximum period of three years on a consolidated monthly pay package subject to satisfactory performance, which will be reviewed annually. Salary will not be a constraint for the deserving candidate. The selected candidate would be evaluated after three months of joining and would be able to complete the first year in the Institute only if the performance is found satisfactory at the end of three months.
